It’s never nice to feel that you’re not being paid attention to, but when it comes to a matter very important to you, like your health, it can feel maddening. Worst still is that because we’re not all doctors, trying to repeatedly emphasize something which is being handwaved by those who have more expertise than you is confusing.
Sometimes they’re even right, that the issue isn’t necessarily something to be deeply concerned by. That’s why it’s important to be mindful and to really focus on what the issue is, and to learn how to communicate it. Though remember, you’re always entitled to a second opinion, and if you feel like a problem should be escalated to a more pressing medical team, you can.
Here’s how, without going against official medical advice, you can escalte a health issue:
Document Your Issue Exactly
In these circumstances it’s best to write down everything that’s been happening with your health, such as when the symptoms started, how often they come up, if you notice any changes, and the times and durations of all this. Note any medications, take any photos if you can, or write down any thoughts. Don’t exaggerate or downplay anything, try to act as if you were a clinician attempting to give the most objective assessment possible. This can help you showcase your concerns and have a clear record of what you’ve been experiencing.
Talk To Emergency Services If Urgent
If you notice an issue getting worse, painful, or affecting your functioning, don’t take a doctor downplaying the issue beforehand and call emergency services. It’s best for them to properly assess you if you’re genuinely concerned as opposed to feeling guilty about bringing it up. There’s a chance your well-meaning doctor has made a mistake, or perhaps they just didn’t assume this could be an issue so soon. That doesn’t mean they’ve been negligent, it just means some conditions can take different directions or present themselves in alternate ways. But your health is important to preserve for now, so call the right team to help you.
Consider A Private Surgery Or Specialist
You can go private to escalate an issue, especially with a surgical centre that has a great record in advocating for their patients. They may also have specialists on hand who could more easily assess the issue you’re dealing with, for instance an audiologist who will know more about hearing health issues.
While you don’t always need to go private to find a specialist appropriate for your needs, you can be certain that doing so will help you find an appointment earlier, because you’re paying for the specialist attention. In some cases this is appropriate when the health condition is rare.
With this advice, we hope you can more easily escalate a health issue you’re concerned about, but feel isn’t being taken as seriously as it should. Stay patient, try not to be overexagerative, and you’ll find the care you may need.
