Florida Man January 24th – Florida man arrested for leading illegal betting ring

 

On January 24th a Florida man was arrested for leading an illegal betting ring, bringing in more than $37 million dollars of profit per month. The betting ring was based around betting on fixed football and soccer matches, and the Florida man, named Jonah Samuels was only caught out thanks to excellent investigative work.

 

Officers had been following the exploits of the Florida man for years but couldn’t find a solid trace of evidence until a football player from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers said he was approached and bribed by a man before the game against Tennessee. He mentioned that he was offered $500,000 to miss tackles against certain players and let them through, with a $250,000 bonus if it looked genuine. Luckily for police, the man was wearing a bodycam as the event happened which was then handed over to the police, so they managed to track the man down via facial recognition.

Officers arrested the Florida man at his rental in Tampa Bay, Florida on the morning of January 24th. They ceased all of his phones, books and records before escorting him off the premises, officers say he did not put up a fight.

The Florida man received a sentence of 37 years for a combination of tax avoidance, illegal betting and attempting to bribe officials. As he was sentenced, his mother was seen crying at the back of the stands and told officers “he will be 70 when he comes out, he will be an old man and I will be gone”.
